A convenience store runs on speed at the counter and margin hidden in the lines nobody thinks about. The POS has to scan fast, prompt on every age-restricted sale, handle lottery both ways, take EBT, and tell you where the business is going.
This guide compares eight systems on published US pricing and the c-store capabilities that actually differ between them. If you want the fundamentals first, our guide to what a pos system does covers them.
1. Vibe Retail
Best for: Convenience stores that want one system across counter, cooler and back office
Published pricing: Essential $19/month for one register; Pro $97/month for unlimited items, multi-location sync and ecommerce. Card-present from 2.9% + 15c down to 2.5% + 10c.
What stands out: Scan-fast checkout, age prompts on restricted lines, promotions priced automatically and shrink reported by category. Pricing is published, which on this SERP is unusual. Multi-site stores get one price list and per-store reporting. Our convenience store POS system page has the detail.
Tradeoffs: If fuel pumps or lottery payout integration are central to your site, confirm those specifically they are the two capabilities most likely to need a partner. Essential at $19 caps at 100 items, so compare against the $97 Pro tier.
2. POS Nation
Best for: Stores that want a c-store specialist
Published pricing: From $49/month, with processing quoted around 2% to 2.5%.
What stands out: NerdWallet’s top pick, and deservedly age-restricted handling, lottery, EBT and scan data are core rather than bolted on. The bundled package gets a store trading quickly.
Tradeoffs: The bundle model means less flexibility if you already own hardware, and pricing beyond the entry tier is quote-led.
3. NRS
Best for: Budget independents and bodegas
Published pricing: Basic $19.95/month, Full Suite $45.95/month. Hardware $599 to $999.
What stands out: Very widely deployed in independent c-stores, and it ranks #2 organically for this term because those stores find it. Cash discount program, EBT, lottery and age verification all covered.
Tradeoffs: Hardware is effectively mandatory, and the ceiling arrives quickly if you expand to several sites.
4. Clover
Best for: Stores that want good hardware fast
Published pricing: From $0 a month for software, with hardware sold separately. Processing 2.5% + 10c.
What stands out: Strong terminals, a large app marketplace, and usually available through your existing bank or processor. Both ranking pages include it.
Tradeoffs: C-store-specific capability comes from third-party apps rather than the core product, and the reseller experience varies a lot.
5. Square
Best for: New stores and low volume
Published pricing: Free, then $49 and $149 per location per month. Processing 2.6% + 15c.
What stands out: Nothing to commit to and nothing to configure. Fine for a small store or a site testing a new format.
Tradeoffs: Lottery and age-restricted handling are limited, and you cannot bring your own processor.
6. IT Retail
Best for: Stores that straddle convenience and grocery
Published pricing: From $49/month, processing quote-based.
What stands out: Grocery-native depth with scales, produce, EBT and department reporting which suits a c-store with a fresh or deli offer.
Tradeoffs: Less well known outside grocery, and quote based processing makes total cost harder to compare.
7. Loyverse
Best for: Single-site stores on a tight budget
Published pricing: Free.
What stands out: Genuinely free software with a workable inventory and reporting layer, and you choose your own processor.
Tradeoffs: No native lottery or EBT handling, limited support, and it will not scale past a single simple site.
8. Epos Now
Best for: Stores wanting hardware choice and a big app store
Published pricing: Contact sales, pricing is quoted.
What stands out: A mainstream retail platform with a large integration marketplace and a range of hardware options, including software-only if you already own terminals.
Tradeoffs: Quote only pricing, and c-store specifics like lottery and scan data come through apps rather than natively.
What it actually costs
C-store POS software runs from free to around $150 a month, with most independents paying $20 to $60. Processing adds roughly 2.5% to 3% plus a per-transaction fee. On $80,000 of monthly card volume that is $2,000 to $2,400 a month, far more than the software.
Hardware runs $600 to $1,000 per lane. Vibe Retail starts at $19 a month, with multi-site and ecommerce features on the $97 Pro tier.
